New building of the Jerzy Giedroyc University Library

3250 m² useful floor area, two tiers, a reading room with an entresol and an inner courtyard as well as a place destined for almost one million of volumes – a new large building of the Jerzy Giedroyc University Library.

On Thursday, 17 June 2021, a press meeting was organized in front of the new seat of the University Library at the campus at Ciolkowskiego Street. Professor Robert Ciborowski, rector of the University of Bialystok and dr hab. Piotr Chomik, prof. UwB, director of the University Library, opened the new seat of the Jerzy Giedroyc University Library. There was also a tour of the new library building.

On the ground floor of the building there is an entrance and an exhibition hall, a circulation desk, library rooms, office and technical rooms. At the entrance of the main building there is a drop box, thanks to which readers can put books back to the library without the need to come into the library also besides the normal working hours.

On the first floor of the building there is a spacious reading room with free access to books, 9 individual work cabins, including two cabins for people with disabilities. Moreover, a conference hall connected with the exposition of the Office of President Ryszard Kaczorowski and a computer lab are located on the same floor.

The inner courtyard is situated in the main part of the upper tier of the building. The atrium is not only a place for resting for library users in the fresh air but also it is space where small cultural or scientific events can be organized.

The construction of the large building started in spring 2019. It costed slightly over PLN 30 million, from which approximately PLN 26.5 million are funds from the purposeful grant of the Ministry of Education and Science and from the sale of treasury bonds given to the University by the Ministry.
