The title of professor was given to six academic workers of the University of Bialystok. The circle of habilitated doctors and doctors was extended at the University. There were also prestigious awards and distinctions, important projects and investments.
The summary we start from the jubilee. The Ceremonial Inauguration of the Academic Year 2021/2022 at the University of Bialystok was the beginning of 25th year of its activity. Its history, development and present, one could see the exceptional exhibition at the Kosciuszko Market Square in Bialystok. There will be more jubilee events! Soon, the new website of the University of Bialystok will be launched.
New professors, habilitated doctors and doctors.
Invariably, the scientific development is the great strength of the University of Bialystok.
In 2021, the title of professor was granted to the following six academic workers of the University of Bialystok: Professor Elżbieta Dąbrowicz (Faculty of Philology), Professor Anna Wydrycka (Faculty of Philology), Professor Wioletta Wejs-Milewska (Faculty of Philology), Professor Andrzej Panasiuk (Faculty of Law), Professor Piotr Nowak (Institute of Philosophy) and Professor Andrzej Stupakiewicz (Faculty of Physics).
There was also an increase in the group of habilitated doctors (nine academic workers in 2021) and doctors (eight academic workers).

Distinctions and awards
University workers activities are valued not only in Poland but also in the world. In 2021 the University of Bialystok was among the best universities in the world in the newest edition of QS World University Rankings 2022. The University was included in the list for the first time and was the only university in the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
The University of Bialystok was also in the prestigious group of 25 Polish universities recorded in the annual ranking of disciplines – Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). Also here the University was the only representative of the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
Another important distinction
The University of Bialystok as one of six academic institutions in Poland was granted the award ELSEVIER Research Impact Leaders Award. It is given to universities that have a huge impact on the visibility of the Polish science in the world. The University of Bialystok won the award in the category of the Natural Sciences.
Furthermore, four scientists are among the best researchers in the world in terms of citation of their works. The following academic researchers are on the ranking list published by Elsevir: Professor Piotr Jaranowski – the astrophysicist from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bialystok, dr hab. Andrzej Bajguz, prof. UwB – the biochemist from the Faculty of Biology and also two other academic workers of the Faculty of Chemistry: Professor Beata Godlewska-Żyłkiewicz dealing with analytical chemistry as well as Professor Krzysztof Winkler specializing in materials chemistry.
Important investments
It was also a good year in terms of investment!
The University has selected the contractor for the new building – the Branch of the University of Bialystok in Vilnius, Faculty of Economics and Computer Science. The building will be designed and built by the Lithuanian company UAB "MOSTA". The new headquarters will be ready within three years. The investment will cost is slightly above EUR 8.5 million.
The cost of the new building of the Jerzy Giedroyc University Library in Campus at Ciolkowskiego Street, which was opened in June 2021, was slightly over PLN 30 million. Students, academic workers and Bialystok residents may use the circulation desk, spacious reading rooms with an entresol and an inner courtyard, and individual work cabins. The new seat of the University Library is a place destined for almost one million of volumes.
The Observatory with the Planetarium is located next to the Library. This year the new telescope ASA 600 weighing several hundred kilograms was installed on the highest tier of the building. The diameter of the main mirror amounts 60 centimetres. This is the unique and biggest telescope in Poland. It will be used for didactic and scientific purposes.
We promote science and health
In 2021 the University of Bialystok, for the first time in its history, presented the World Exhibition Expo 2020 in Dubai. The University showed accomplishments of its researchers, promoted pro-ecological education and gave presents from the University of Bialystok Publishing House. Furthermore, five students of the University of Bialystok were volunteers in the Polish Pavilion. Their three-month internship finished. The participation of the biggest university in the Podlaskie Region at Expo was possible thanks to the Xylopolis project, which is promoting the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The University of Bialystok is one of its partners.
The University of Bialystok promotes healthy and ecological lifestyle also thanks to its own apiaries located on the roof of the Faculty of Biology. The first honey harvest took place in July. We managed to harvest 30 kilos of honey. This delicious academic product is not for sale because it promotes the University of Bialystok.
